Corporal Grant Flores was a reserve firefighter from July 2021 to July 2022 for the Orange County Fire Authority. Over this period, Corporal Flores volunteered over 1000 hours and served the citizens of Emerald Bay at OCFA Fire Station 11. Corporal Flores responded on both Engine and Patrol 11 to emergency incidents such as medical aids, structure fires, brush fires, remote rescues, hazardous conditions, etc.

On May 20, 2022, Corporal Flores, along with those assigned to Patrol 11, were some of the first firefighters to respond to the Coastal Fire. The Coastal Fire burned 200 acres of wildland, destroyed 20 homes, and caused millions of dollars in damage to the cities of Laguna Beach and Laguna Niguel. Corporal Flores risked his life as a reserve firefighter to protect life and property in this instance and several other occasions during his time at Station 11.

Along with responding to emergency incidents, Corporal Flores also participated in several community engagement events such as pancake breakfasts, station visits, and smoke detector installations.

Corporal Flores is now a full-time firefighter for the Orange County Fire Authority and uses his knowledge as a civilian firefighter to train his junior marines.

Corporal Flores' volunteer service as a reserve firefighter for the OCFA meets all of the criteria to be eligible for the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal. His service was of a voluntary nature to a civilian community, significant in nature and produced tangible results, reflected favorably on the DOD, was of a direct and sustained nature, and was not performed while deployed in a combat theater. He reflected well not only on himself but the United States Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
