Aviation Ordnanceman (AO) Awards


AO2 Herring demonstrated exceptional dedication and leadership while training 312 Sailors in the Qualification and Certification process for Ammo Academy. His efforts ensured that each individual not only met but often exceeded the rigorous standards required for Certification. As the Quality Assurance Safety Officer (QASO), AO2 Herring demonstrated exceptional leadership and attention to detail during the offloading of palletized ammunition onboard the Lewis and Clark. He effectively oversaw the operation, ensuring that all procedures were executed safely and efficiently. His meticulous planning and supervision resulted in the successful offload of ammunition from Hold One, totaling 1,022,909 pounds in net explosive weight.

Through his efforts, there were no damages to equipment, and there were no injuries to personnel, which is a testament to his commitment to safety and operational excellence. AO2 Herring's dedication to maintaining high standards of safety and efficiency played a crucial role in the smooth execution of this high-risk operation. His performance in this critical task reflects his outstanding technical skills, leadership ability, and unwavering focus on mission success.

AO2 Herring serves as the Chemical Biological Radiation Defense (CBR-D) Sailor, responsible for ensuring that all personnel are properly equipped with the necessary CBR-D gear to maintain combat readiness. This duty involves conducting routine inspections, distribution of protective equipment, and ensuring that sailors are trained and familiar with the use of CBR-D protective gear. AO2 Herring ensures that all personnel are prepared to respond to potential CBR-D threats, enhancing the overall safety and operational effectiveness of the command.

AO2 Herring has demonstrated exceptional dedication to community service during the evaluation period, totaling 285 hours of volunteering. His commitment to volunteering and supporting various local events has significantly enhanced the relationship between the Navy and the local community. The sailor volunteered for multiple events, contributing to youth development, environmental initiatives, and disaster relief efforts.




PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT AS QUALITY ASSURANCE SAFETY OBSERVER AT AIR TEST AND EVALUATION SQUADRON NINE FROM MAY 2018 TO JUNE 2018. DEMONSTRATING EXCEPTIONAL LEADERSHIP, HE MASTERFULLY LED EIGHT SAILORS TO PERFORM BY-THE-BOOK LOADING/DOWNLOADING OF 11 AGM-88 HIGH SPEED ANTI RADIATION MISSILES, 16 AIM-120 ADVANCED MEDIUM RANGE AIR TO AIR MISSILES, AND 120 ALE-47 AIRBORNE COUNTERMEASURES. HIS ATTENTION TO DETAIL AND KNOWLEDGE OF ORDNANCE PUBLICATIONS WAS ESSENTIAL TO THE COMPLETION OF 2018 CONVENTIONAL WEAPONS TECHNICAL PROFICIENCY INSPECTION RECEIVING A NEAR PERFECT SCORE OF 1,480 OUT OF 1,500 POINTS ACROSS 5 DIFFERENT MODEL AIRCRAFT. PETTY OFFICER JONES CONSISTENTLY PERFORMED HIS DUTIES IN AN EXEMPLARY AND HIGHLY PROFESSIONAL MANNER. DEMONSTRATING SUPERIOR EXPERTISE AND METICULOUS ATTENTION TO DETAIL, HE WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN THE TRANSFER OF 300,000 POUNDS OF AMMUNITION DURING 4 OFF LOADS IN SUPPORT OF THE 11TH MARINE EXPEDITIONARY UNIT'S EXERCISES IN THE U.A.E. AND KUWAIT, INCREASING THE OVERALL TRAINING AND READINESS OF THE BATTALION LANDING TROOPS ASSIGNED TO USS CLEVELAND AND RUSHMORE. IN AN EXCEPTIONALLY DANGEROUS WORKING ENVIRONMENT, AOC(AW) SAFELY AND SUCCESSFULLY LOADED OVER 40,000 POUNDS OF LIVE ORDNANCE WITH A CVW-17 RECORD SORTIE COMPLETION RATE OF 98.5 PERCENT, ALL WITHOUT ANY INJURY OR INCIDENT TO HIMSELF OR DIVISION PERSONNEL. TAKING THE INITIATIVE, AOC(AW) FEARLESS COMPLETED 15 STRIKE FIGHTER WEAPONS TEST SYLLABUS EVENTS FOR JUNIOR AIRCREW, ACHIEVING C2 LEVEL OVERALL COMBAT READINESS THREE MONTHS AHEAD OF SCHEDULE. FOR OUTSTANDING MERITORIOUS SERVICE WHILE SERVING AS OFFICER IN CHARGE, NAVY MUNITIONS COMMAND, EAST ASIA DIVISION FROM XXXX XXXX TO XXXX XXXX. LIEUTENANT COMMANDER JAVIER'S EXCEPTIONAL LEADERSHIP WAS KEY TO OVER 300 OUTSTANDING ORDNANCE EVOLUTIONS EXECUTED SAFELY AND ON TIME IN SUPPORT OF 12 FORWARD DEPLOYED NAVAL SHIPS, 22 TENANT COMMANDS AND THE THIRD MARINE EXPEDITIONARY FORCE. LCDR JAVIER TRANSFORMED HIS DETACHMENT INTO THE PREMIER ORDNANCE WATERFRONT STORAGE AND TRANSSHIPMENT FACILITY DIRECTLY SUPPORTING THE COMMANDER PACIFIC FLEET AND COMMANDER SEVENTH FLEET ORDNANCE MISSION REQUIREMENTS IN SUPPORT OF REAL WORLD OPERATIONS AND TRAINING. LCDR JAVIER WAS ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR PLANNING AND EXECUTING TWO SUCCESSFUL FOREIGN MILITARY ORDNANCE OFFLOADS AND ONLOADS IN SUPPORT OF THE ROYAL THAI NAVY AND THE JAPANESE MARITIME DEFENSE FORCE. THESE OPERATIONS VALIDATED UNTESTED CONCEPTS AND PROCEDURES AND INCREASED READINESS FOR JOINT OPERATIONS. LCDR JAVIER WAS ALSO DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE FOR FACILITY UPGRADES COSTING IN EXCESS OF $10,000,000 THAT IMPROVED OPERATIONS AND THE SAFETY OF A DEGRADING INFRASTRUCTURE THAT ARE CRITICAL IN SUPPORTING AND SUSTAINING THE PACIFIC FLEET ORDNANCE MISSION. WHILE DEPLOYED IN SUPPORT OF OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM, PETTY OFFICER MILLY COORDINATED AND EXECUTED TWO COMPLEX, MULTI-NATIONAL TRAINING EXERCISES THAT INCLUDED BRITISH, AUSTRALIAN, AND KUWAITI FORCE PROTECTION COUNTERPARTS. IN ADDITION, HE COMPLETED SEVERAL SURVEYS UNDER AUSTERE CONDITIONS TO PLACE AND RECOVER METEOROLOGICAL SENSORS POSITIONED ALONG THE IRAQI OIL PIPELINE INFRASTRUCTURE.
