Culinary Specialist Submarine (CSS) Awards
MERITORIOUS SERVICE WHILE SERVING AS CULINARY SPECIALIST ONBOARD SUBMARINE BASE KINGS BAY, GEORGIA FROM AUGUST 2019 TO FEBRUARY 2022. AS THE PIRATES COVE LEADING PETTY OFFICER, PETTY OFFICER TURNER PROFICIENTLY LED 66 PERSONNEL IN THE PREPARATION OF OVER 700 DAILY MEALS ACROSS FIVE FACILITIES SUPPORTING SAILORS AND MARINES. AS TRAINING PETTY OFFICER FOR PIRATES COVE GALLEY, HE TRAINED JUNIOR PERSONNEL IN EVERY FACET OF FOOD SERVICE TO MAINTAIN SANITATION STANDARDS AND EFFICIENCY. HE PROVIDED OVER EIGHT HOURS OF FOOD PREPARATION AND STORAGE TRAINING AND QUALIFIED 22 CIVILIAN FOOD SERVICE ATTENDANTS, FACILITATING A POSITIVE AND HEALTHY DINING EXPERIENCE. ADDITIONALLY, AS COMMAND DUTY OFFICER, HE DEMONSTRATED A THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF BASE OPERATIONS AND LED AN INSTALLATION-WIDE TEAM WHICH ENSURED THE SAFETY AND SECURITY OF OVER NINE THOUSAND BASE PERSONNEL. MOREOVER, AS URINALYSIS COORDINATOR, PETTY OFFICER TURNER OVERSAW THE COLLECTION OF 888 SAMPLES DURING 77 TESTING DAYS, RESULTING IN THE COMMAND EXCEEDING ALL PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS. PETTY OFFICER TURNER'S PERSONAL INITIATIVE AND UNWAVERING DEVOTION TO DUTY REFLECTED GREAT CREDIT UPON HIMSELF AND WERE IN KEEPING WITH THE HIGHEST TRADITIONS OF THE UNITED STATES NAVAL SERVICE.

PETTY OFFICER JOHNSON WAS DIRECTLY INVOLVED WITH THE OPENING OF A NEW CULINARY TEST KITCHEN AS WELL AS THE PREPARATIONS FOR THE CEREMONY COMMEMORATING THE OPENING OF PIER 31 AT GROTON SUBASE. THIS LANDMARK EVENT WAS ATTENDED BY THE SENATOR AS WELL AS THE GOVERNER OF CONNECTICUT AND WAS A RESOUNDING SUCCESS, RECEIVING ACCOLADES FROM ALL THAT ATTENDED. PETTY OFFICER JOHNSON'S PERSONAL INITIATIVE AND UNWAVERING DEVOTION TO DUTY REFLECTED GREAT CREDIT UPON HIMSELF AND WERE IN KEEPING WITH THE HIGHEST TRADITIONS OF UNITED STATES NAVAL SERVICE.
FOR MERITORIOUS SERVICE WHILE SERVING AS A MEMBER OF THE QUALITY OF LIFE DEPARTMENT ON BOARD NAVAL SUBMARINE BASE NEW LONDON, FROM APRIL 2010 TO APRIL 2013. PETTY OFFICER SMITH CONSISTENTLY PERFORMED HIS DEMANDING DUTIES IN AN EXEMPLARY AND HIGHLY PROFESSIONAL MANNER. AS A COOK ON WATCH, HE PREPARED NUTRITIOUS AND HIGH QUALITY MEALS THAT IMPROVED CROSS HALL GALLEY DAILY FEEDING OF OVER 2,000 PATRONS. HIS EXPERTISE IN FOOD SERVICE OPERATIONS WAS A MAJOR FACTOR IN THE DELIVERY OF A FLAWLESS THANKSGIVING AND CHRISTMAS DINNER MENU FOR FISCAL YEAR 2012 WHICH LIFTED THE SPIRITS OF OVER 700 SAILORS AND THEIR DEPENDANTS. ADDITIONALLY, PETTY OFFICER SMITH VOLUNTEERED OVER 20 HOURS TO SUPPORT SUBVETS WITH THEIR ANNUAL TRADITION OF FEEDING THE LOCAL COMMUNITY AND VETERANS. FINALLY, AS MESS DECK MASTER AT ARMS FROM MARCH THROUGH JULY 2012, HE COLLECTED AN AVERAGE OF OVER 400 DOLLARS DAILY AND ENSURED MEAL SIGNATURE RECORDS WERE SERIALIZED AND FILLED OUT CORRECTLY FOR ALL MEALS. PETTY OFFICER SMITH'S PERSONAL INITIATIVE AND UNWAVERING DEVOTION TO DUTY REFLECTED GREAT CREDIT UPON HIMSELF AND WERE IN KEEPING WITH THE HIGHEST TRADITIONS OF UNITED STATES NAVAL SERVICE.

PETTY OFFICER SMITH CONSISTENTLY PERFORMED HIS DUTIES IN AN EXEMPLARY AND HIGHLY PROFESSIONAL MANNER. HE DEDICATED OVER 40 HOURS OF OFF-DUTY TIME TO ENSURE THE GALLEY MAINTAINED THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF CLEANLINESS AND SANITATION. AS RECORDS KEEPER, HE SCORED 100% OF THE MAXIMUM POINTS AVAILABLE FOR ADMIN AND WAS CITED FOR HAVING THE BEST TRAINING PROGRAM IN THE MID ATLANTIC REGION. HIS COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE DIRECTLY CONTRIBUTED TO THE CROSS HALL GALLEY RECEIVING 1270 POINTS OF A POSSIBLE 1300 ON THE RECENT FIVE STAR INSPECTION AND LED TO THE AWARD OF FIVE STAR ACCREDIDATION FOR 2012. PETTY OFFICER SMITH'S PERSONAL INITIATIVE AND UNWAVERING DEVOTION TO DUTY REFLECTED GREAT CREDIT UPON HIMSELF AND WERE IN KEEPING WITH THE HIGHEST TRADITIONS OF UNITED STATES NAVAL SERVICE.
Chief Petty Officer Hastings served a total of 21 years and two months as an Active Duty service member. Chief Hastings served as the Submarine Fleet Culinary Specialist at Navy Supply Systems Command (NAVSUPSYSCOM) in the food service department for the past three years. As the program manager of the Navy's Culinary Arts Team, he provided essential training and mentoring for aspiring junior and senior Active Duty Sailors and prepared them to compete in the world's greatest culinary competition, the Joint Culinary Training Exercise, where teams from around the globe come to compete annually. Additionally, Chief Hastings was the Drug and Alcohol Program Advisor and only had to assist one Service Member while attached to NAVSUPSYSCOM. He also provided training and mentoring for Inspector General Inspections for Bahrain Base.
Chief Hastings was deployed to Afghanistan for a year with a Provincial Reconstruction Team where he served as the Mission Commander for the Engineering Department. He planned the routes which supported the projects being developed within Kunar Province. During this year, he went on 45 missions outside the wire leading a four vehicle convoy, and also manned the observation posts overlooking the Forward Operating Base. He received an Army Achievement Medal, an Army Commendation Medal, and a Combat Action Badge while performing his duties in Afghanistan.
Chief Hastings was deployed on a total of seven deterrent patrols on Ballistic Submarines and five Western Pacific deployments aboard Fast Attack Submarines which took his career from Galley Watch Captain to Supply Department Enlisted Advisor within 15 years of Sea Service. Additionally, Chief Hastings taught at the Center for Service Support Culinary "A" School for two years, teaching over 300 student Sailors in class room and practical environments.
